The Challenge

Three years ago, I started a cleaning business in London and struggled to find any clients, other than bidding for leads on Bark and Checkatrade. I realised that, I could make a living but in the long run, this wouldn’t be sustainable as I’d always depend on these websites and I wasn’t really working for my brand, I was helping Bark and Checkatrade build their reputation while I was delivering a 5-star service.

I had past experience with SEO. I first encountered that term in 2014 and I tested it, but I didn’t achieve any results and wasted over a year of trial and error. Now I decided to try SEO again, avoiding all the mistakes I made in the past and the results were incredible. The first 6 months were all about SEO optimisation and creating content, making sure the website is fast, responsive and SEO-friendly. I wrote an in-depth article on the cleaning prices in UK and that’s when everything changed for my cleaning business. I started getting high-quality leads through this article and through other pages which started ranking higher because my article was linking back to them and sending positive signals to Google. The best part, I didn’t have to underbid my service because I had no competition on my website, it was just me.

The problems with my old website were:

  • The website was a one-page “business card” which didn’t convey any trust to online visitors.
  • The website had primarily text and the communication was more about 1Clean, rather than what benefits can bring to the target customer.
  • There was no informational architecture to guide visitors around the website.
  • Never had an online request for a quote due to lack of strategic navigation, clear CTA’s and contact us page.
  • The website was nowhere to be found online.

The Process

First I dove into conversion rate optimisation and how to create a design that clearly communicates the value proposition and to keep the branding consistent throughout the website. I was also obsessing with how to structure the website content in order to convert visitors into leads.

A great SEO campaign starts with a research and analysis. I discovered there were around 7,500 cleaning businesses registered at that time in London and 79 websites that had been nurtured for 10+ years, which made them very difficult to compete with. Still, with so much competition, I had to figure out a way to stand out and rank high on Google. I analysed what my competitors are doing to be successful and compared their target customer to develop the right informational architecture.

I then created a custom SEO campaign focusing on the weak spots of my competitors. The campaign included best practices SEO on page and off page optimisation, speed optimisation, internal linking, blog, thorough keyword research and analysis and creating A/B test service page layouts to determine what content would rank higher.

Fully optimised my Google business profiles so I can appear on maps searches looking professional and trustworthy to help with leads generation. At this stage I created a NAP file that I would submit into as many citation websites as possible, so that would also increase my exposure and potentially improve rankings. This would also send signal to Google that I am a legitimate business and this would boost my GMB profile up.

The Results

The web layout was developed in a way to guide visitors through a digital journey. From the value proposition to benefits, features, trust-building and clear CTA’s to never miss a curious visitor’s quote request again.

After the initial 6 months of optimisation, I gradually started generating leads and within 6 months I received 200+ organic leads out of which I closed 86 and this resulted in an average of £25,800 of revenue. I only invested £1,200 in an SEO course and conversion optimisation training.

I am particularly proud with the “After Builders Cleaning Prices” blog post which ranks 1st on Google search for transactional/commercial keywords “Builders Clean Prices” and “After Builders Cleaning Prices” which drives constant traffic for 1Clean’s most profitable service. Even now when I am no longer working on the SEO since January 2024, the website continues to generate leads non stop.
